The Guildford Town Centre Cycle Races have been running (almost uninterrupted) since 1984 and this year the riders will be christening the fully completed relaid setts (no, they are not cobbles!) after delays almost threatened last years' event.  However, they are looking clean and fresh on the picturesque Guildford High Street with a number of former winners returning to try and retake their crown.

The Penningtons Manches Elite Criterium will see the winners of the last two events come up head to head but this time with limited team support and both riders being on new teams.  Rory Townsend (BIKE Channel Canyon) will be looking to retain the title ahead of Alex Paton (Madison Genesis) who won the previous year in 2015.  However, there will be a number of teams looking to ensure that the former winners don't have it all their way including a strong line-up from the Nuun-Sigma Sport-London team which include another former winner in Justin Hoy who won the event back in 2003! (sorry to mention that Justin).

Meanwhile, the women's race (to which promoting club Charlotteville CC put their name) also see's last years' winner Mathilde Pauls (SigmaSport.co.uk) return to Guildford with opposition including Jessica Finney (Portsmouth North End CC) and Sophie Edmondson (The 5th Floor Cycle Club) who filled the top two places at the inaugural Farnham Town Centre Races just last weekend.

The big event in local amateur racing circles is the Cycleworks Local Heroes Criterium where Farnham TCR winner Callum Middleton (Lewes Wanderers CC) will be looking for a repeat win in Guildford.  However, it would be difficult to look past Paul Hopkins (Merida Factory Racing) as a favourite for the title given that Hopkins only races a few times on the roads each year (usually favouring muddier terrain) but he won the support event in back in 2002 and four more times since then with a second place last year.

Over one hundred 6 to 16 year olds across a number of age categories will take to the start line for the Hamptons International Youth Criteriums for the first events of the evening.  These are usually the highlight of the cycling year for these young riders, many of whom progress on to be bigger names in cycling as they get older.

The racing is free to watch to all spectators and starts just after 6pm until 9pm.  Please come down and suppport the riders and see what local bike racing is all about.

You can also download a spectator rider list from here or pick up a copy on the night.
